2. year in Portugal

04 mar 09: The 2. year students had a marvellous studytrip to Porto and Braga in Portugal. During the last two weeks Siza, Portwine and drawing has been on our schedule. Here is a short review and some pictures from the trip.
We arrived in Porto 18th or 19th of february, and met with teachers Asbjørn Andresen, Inga Lindstrøm and Bård Møller who stayed with is the whole trip. First week we stayed in Porto.
Porto is a pittoresque city with the Douro-river and houses covered with azulejos. But the city centre is full of empty shells that once were houses. Now most people live outside of the centre, shop at their mall and eat at fancy restaurants there. The first day we started off with a quick analysis of some citystructures inside of old town.
One of the treasures we found was a structured called ilha - an island - made in the 50's for workers. They live extremely close and the steps between private and public are tiny but clear.
In Matosinhos, a part of Porto located by the coast, Alvaro Siza has his bath and his tea house. The human scale and simplicity of these projects impressed many of us.
The Serralves museum of contemperary art, is also a Siza project, one of the last he participated in. It is located inside a huge, beautiful park.
During our time in Porto we also visited Casa da Musica by Rem Koolhas. We went to a kind of weird carneval concert there. The picture below is from one of the educational rooms, for children.
More about the week in Braga is soon to come! We promise!
